Review

Fearne has a really beautiful languid style of storytelling, and she picks some really interesting settings and occupations. In this case, a salt Island in France, which I loved. One of my favourite non-fiction books is Salt by Mark Kurlansky, so this story made my nerdy heart sing, not to mention my love of all things french!

Charles was a fascinating character, and lordy, I can’t imagine what it’s like to have a brain causing so much chaos. It was heartbreaking. But his strength was beautiful.

Some would ask why Florian would sign up for all of it. It’s a testament to the fact that our hearts aren’t logical. When someone speaks to you, you love all of them. And his Belgian was what his heart wanted.

I loved the way they helped and supported each other, while also finding their own personal strength to go after what they want and need.

Synopsis

Falling in love with this odd Englishman is as unexpected as it is welcome. Both exploring new feelings, the lazy days of summer stretch out for miles until a visitor from Charles’s London life throws their peaceful idyll into a kaleidoscope of chaos. And, all of a sudden, the island’s glorious palette of colour turns several shades darker.

Fearne Hill is an author living in the deepest Dorset countryside with varying numbers of chickens, a few tortoises and a beautiful cocker spaniel. Her novel, Two Tribes, is a 2023 Lambda Literary finalist.

When she is not overseeing her small menagerie, she is writing contemporary queer romance.

And when she is not doing either of those, she is working as a consultant anaesthetist.
