Little Fish and Pretty Black Bird

Ah man, what a fantastic story. I was completely mesmerized by this fascinating world, and the two men bound together for an unknown purpose.

It was such great world-building. There are four kingdoms, with four rulers who have only known peace. ‘Who wears the mark bears the crown’. They are brought together for an event that sees betrayal. What I loved (all of it!) was the distinct cultures of each kingdom and the personalities that inhabited them.

I also loved their banter, which largely started as chirping and annoyance, but grew more playful the more time they spent together.

“What is it, little fish?” he asked quietly.

Tancho shot him a fiery gaze that quickly melted into a half-smile. “I hate that name.”

Crow’s smile won out. “I don’t think you do.”

“If anyone else called me that, I’d slit their throat.”

“If anyone else called you that, I’d slit their throat.”

They had to work together to solve an ever-evolving mystery. These two kings with giant hearts and amazing found families who learn to trust and love as they battle dark forces. There was beauty, tenderness, and so much passion.

I loved it, and even more so because of the incredible job at narration that Nick J Russo performed. It really was an impressive narration.

Synopsis

Twenty-five years ago, the hand of fate marked four newborns and sent them to the four corners of the Great Kingdoms. They were schooled and trained as rulers of their lands in preparation for the Golden Eclipse ceremony: a festival to celebrate a thousand years of peace and prosperity since the Great War.

Crow, ruler of Northlands, a skilled swordsman and expert tactician, is as reclusive and stoic as the mountains that surround him.
